The Sustainability Promotion Department has for mission to maximize corporate value by improving the sustainability of the Rakuten Group.

Department Overview

Since 2018, Rakuten has been accelerating its sustainability-related activities : improvement of governance (establishment of Sustainability Committee, adoption of group-wide sustainability policies), participation in international initiatives (SDGs, RE100), renewal of social initiative strategy (partnership with JICA), transparent non-financial disclosure (Corporate Report and website redesign)…

Our Sustainability Promotion Department consists of talented members with diverse backgrounds, fulfilling the following functions.

ESG communication

Improvement of corporate communication and ESG (Environment, Society, Governance) ratings through the disclosure of non-financial information.

Sustainability strategy

Identification of Rakuten’s materiality, environmental and human rights impact assessments, sustainable procurement activities, international initiative memberships, collaboration with Group companies, etc.

Internal communication

Provision of information – e-learning, seminars, etc. - for employees to have a greater understanding and ownership of sustainability-related matters.

Social impact

Planning and implementation of social contribution activities. Creation of social impact by leveraging Rakuten’s assets and culture.

This time, we are especially looking for someone who can join the team in charge of the "Sustainability Strategy". Depending on one’s capacity, the candidate may also contribute to “ESG communication”.

Position :

Why We Hire

For the past few years, Rakuten has been striving to better address its sustainability and expectations from stakeholders, which has notably resulted in an increase of its ESG ratings. However, improving the social and environmental impact of our business portfolio of over 70 services, including e-commerce, Fintech, Mobile, is a never-ending challenge, and strengthening our leadership requires further efforts.

We are looking for candidates motivated to take on this challenge. In charge of the “Sustainability Strategy” function, their strong passion for sustainability should drive their will to learn, to proactively take actions, and to set and achieve ambitious goals for Rakuten and society.

Position Details

  • Planning and organizing the Group Sustainability Committee and Subcommittees
  • Set targets and KPIs for material issues, and monitor progress
  • Promote internal projects such as sustainable procurement, human rights due diligence, and natural resource management
  • Propose and support sustainability-related projects for the Group, or respond to consultations from Group companies
  • Review of sustainability related communication materials
  • Research and report on case studies of leading companies
  • Sustainability education to employees, business partners and suppliers

Also engage in the following task depending on one’s capacity :

  • ESG disclosure, review and improvement proposals (S&P, FTSE, MSCI, etc.)
  • ESG Data collection, Data assurance
  • Creating integrated reports and updating sustainability page of our corporate website
  • Social contribution through cooperation with NGOs and support for employee volunteers
  • Work Environment

    The entire department currently has about 20 full-time employees, including new graduates and mid-career workers.

    Mandatory Qualifications :

  • Good understanding of sustainability challenges (human rights, natural resources…) and knowledge of related global trends
  • 2-5 years of working experience, preferably in the field of sustainability
  • Excellent project management skills and experience with multi-stakeholder projects
  • Capacity to gather and organize accurate information in a speedy manner
  • Willingness to learn new knowledge and to keep on learning
  • Strong passion for integrating sustainability into business operation
  • Solid knowledge of Microsoft Office and good presentation skills
  • Business level English, both written and spoken
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Experience in sustainability-related work at a company, consulting firm, government agency, etc.
  • Sustainability reporting and ESG disclosure
  • Academic background in natural resource management, and / or human rights
  • Branding and consumer communication related to sustainability
  • Experience with NGO / NPO addressing social issues
  • Experience in leading new businesses and projects
  • Facilitation skills for workshops, etc.
  • Experience working in a global environment
