Position Summary :

The Medical Affairs Manager is responsible for leading and executing the Medical Affairs Strategy for Japan. The role will provide the medical leadership and clinical expertise in planning, development, and commercialization of products in the Oncology, Reproductive Health, and Genetic Diseases segments. This role will be primarily focused on developing and executing strategies for evidence generation, medical education, and building relationships with Key Opinion Leaders (KOLs), Health Care Professionals (HCPs), Health Care Organizations (HCOs), Professional Societies, Pharmaceutical companies and customers within Japan to enable the adoption of Illumina’s products into the clinical market. The role will foster robust and transparent scientific dialogue and educate and connect with groups who could benefit from Illumina technology.

This position is part of Illumina’s Global Medical Affairs organization and reports to a Regional Head of Medical Affairs in the AMEA region. The role will work across Illumina’s cross-functional teams (Sales, Marketing, Markets Access, Government Affairs, Regulatory, and Clinical Affairs, etc.) to ensure alignment with corporate goals and objectives. The individual will work as a member of a dynamic and collaborative team. This is an opportunity to lay the foundation in genomic medicine with a company leading the transformation in next-generation sequencing.

Position Responsibilities :

  • Lead scientific engagement with KOLs and Medical Experts, implement educational strategies, and respond to unsolicited medical inquiries.
  • Engage with KOLs and HCPs to educate on medical / scientific information.
  • Ensure appropriate identification / mapping of KOLs; develop and implement KOL engagement plans aligned with the country's medical strategy.
  • Develop strategic partnerships with external stakeholders, such as pharmaceutical companies and medical societies, to drive education and adoption of genomics in clinical care.
  • Collaborate with other cross-functional teams to identify gaps in evidence / data and support research collaborations and partnerships.
  • Develop, maintain, and manage collaborative relationships, especially around research collaborations with KOLs and other HCPs.
  • Develop and lead medical education planning by identifying opportunities such as congresses, symposiums, IMED programs, etc.
  • Review and keep current on key publications and national, regional, and international clinical practice guidelines.
  • Serve as an external and internal subject matter expert in the clinical applications of Illumina’s technology.
  • Provide training and support to the commercial teams as required.
  • Attend conferences and scientific symposia to remain conversant on the latest current scientific knowledge.
  • Participate in external speaking engagements related to clinical genetics, genetic testing, and counseling.
  • Lead Medical / Scientific advisory board planning in Japan.
  • Inform and craft medical strategy by collecting impactful insights from KOLs and HCPs.
  • Support Medical Affairs strategic planning across the segments.
  • Support Illumina’s corporate goals and objectives across segments.
  • Follow high standards of compliance & ethics, and safety by putting patients at the center of all actions.

Preferred Experience / Education / Skills :

  • Advanced Clinical / Science Degree required (e.g., MD, PharmD, PhD, etc.) and at least 3-5 years of direct clinical or relevant industry experience.
  • Understanding of clinical diagnostics, clinical genomics, personalized medicine, and its application to different disease areas is preferred.
  • Preferred to have an established network of KOL physicians and institutions in Japan.
  • Relevant industry experience and experience in managing research collaboration are preferred.
  • Able to readily interpret scientific data, understand the potential impact of data on clinical approaches and research needs, and communicate scientific and clinical data to broad audiences.
  • Demonstrated track record of effectively collaborating with cross-functional teams and functions.
  • Excellent oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Spoken and written fluency in Japanese and business English is a plus.
  • Excellent analytical and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to flex and thrive in an ambiguous environment undergoing transformational change.
  • Ability to travel at least 30-40%.
