Business Overview

Rakuten Group, Inc. (hereinafter called Rakuten) has almost 100 million customers based in Japan and 1 billion globally as well, providing more than 70 services in a variety such as e-commerce, payment services, financial services, telecommunication, media, sports, etc.

Department Overview

Since 2018, Rakuten has been accelerating its sustainability-related activities :

  • Improving governance : Establishing a Sustainability Committee and adoption of group-wide sustainability policies
  • Participation in international initiatives : RE100 and SBTi
  • Renewing social initiative strategies : Comprehensive partnership agreement with JICA
  • Disclosing non-financial information with high transparency : Corporate reports and website renewal

The mission of Sustainability Promotion Department is “Transform Rakuten Group and society with stakeholders for the Sustainable growth”.

Our Department consists of talented members with diverse backgrounds, fulfilling the following functions.

ESG communication

Improvement of corporate communication and ESG (Environment, Society, Governance) ratings through the disclosure of non-financial information.

Sustainability strategy

Identification of Rakuten’s materiality, environmental and human rights impact assessments, sustainable procurement activities, international initiative memberships, collaboration with Group companies, etc.

Internal communication

Provision of information, e-learning, seminars, etc., for employees to have a greater understanding and ownership of sustainability-related matters.

Social impact

Planning and implementation of social contribution activities. Creation of social impact by leveraging Rakuten’s assets and culture.

We work extensively to develop Group-wide strategies and promote their implementation, with the aim of a future in which Rakuten and its stakeholders fully share environmental awareness and are able to make natural and “green” choices.

We widely communicate with a lot of stakeholders and involve. Based on the correct analysis of the current situation, and incorporating a wide range of perspectives, the organization value for the attitude of thinking through the "Why we do it?"

Our scope is the entire environmental field, especially in climate change. We accelerate three pillars of activities in the environmental area.

We have two groups as following :

  • Business Incubation Group : To maximize profit contribution from environmental activities
  • Supplier Engagement Group : To maximize external stakeholders' perception of environmental contribution
  • There is a wide range of work required to achieve the mission under the rapidly growing company and Eco-system.

    We are looking for people who have a strong interest in synergies between environment and business, and want to create new value in this new area through Rakuten's broad business.

    Position Details

    In order to achieve our mission, you will be responsible for creating a company-wide environmental strategy across more than 70 domestic and international businesses, planning measures, promoting their implementation, and developing structures. Liaison and negotiation with internal and external stakeholders will occur.

    Example of job description

  • Developing short-to long-term strategies in the environmental domain
  • Creation of new environmental services
  • Maximizing the revenue contribution of existing environmental services
  • Define environmental data / build infrastructure / obtain third-party assurance and improve efficiency
  • Assess environmental impact of business and ESG disclosure (CDP / DJSI / FTSE / MSCI etc.)
  • Promotion of environment-related consumer communication
  • Promoting energy-saving measures to achieve medium- and long-term reduction targets
  • Building an internal organization to comply with environmental laws
  • Work Environment

  • Approximately 20 members
  • Most of members are 20s or 30s
  • The ratio of experienced and inexperienced environmental industry professionals in the team is about 3 : 7
  • Those who have environmental experiences from the environmental consultancies and the environmental departments of manufacturers
  • Mandatory Qualifications :

  • Enthusiasm for the environmental / sustainability field
  • Experience in environment-related strategy development / project implementation (any background in consulting firms, business corporations, government agencies, etc. is acceptable, as we are looking for a broad range of knowledge)
  • Smooth communication skills in Japanese
  • Desired Qualifications :

  • Business level English
  • Knowing about environmental laws
  • Promoting energy saving in a company

    There is a possibility of domestic and overseas business travel and relocation.

    Additional information on English Qualification

    TOEIC score 800 or above. (Or be able to provide proof of a qualification with the same level of English language proficiency, or proof of a university degree or higher from an English-speaking country).

    Proof of eligibility is required by the timing of the offer letter.

    If you do not have a score or proof, you will be invited to take the TOEIC IP test organized by us during the selection process.
