You will be a key member of the Proposal Excellence Team for SHaPE, with a focus on Japan. In this role, you will own a portfolio of proposals in support of the SHaPE Practice that are worked in coordination with a range of collaborators. This role is a unique blend of strategy, operations, content expertise, stakeholder management, communications / design, and project management. Specifically, you will collaborate with consultant teams to develop compelling and compliant proposals, either owning key content elements (e.g., executive summaries, work plan, case studies, qualifications) or leading end-to-end support.

You will become a trusted advisor to consultant teams on proposal best practices and the full range of communications considerations for documents and presentations. Drawing on the full range of assets and capabilities, you will ensure that the “best of the Firm” is brought to the proposal based on the client need.

You will manage proposal performance management processes and systems (e.g., tracking, debriefs). Where needed, you will facilitate reviews with other Firm Functions and conduct compliance and quality reviews. You will guide colleagues to ensure adherence to relevant procedures, such as file structure, archive, and backup, for all proposal materials and processes.

Additionally, you will prepare templates, compliance matrices, close-out activities, and other administrative elements throughout proposal development based on submission requirements. You will strengthen the Firm’s proposal knowledge and capabilities through learning program facilitation, asset creation, knowledge codification, and active dissemination of best practices, tools, and methodologies.

Finally, you will help build the Firm’s proposal community through recruiting, development, and coaching of team members.

You’ll be part of McKinsey’s SHaPE Team and will be based in Tokyo, Japan.

You will be a thought partner to Practice leaders to help deliver the client activation mission, supporting the overall client activation strategy and serving as the point person managing priority proposal opportunities. You will collaborate with Japan-based Partners and Consultants, as well as Client Development Advisors serving public sector clients. You will collaborate with Proposal Coordinator and other members of the support functions leading priority proposals.

Alongside your alignment to SHaPE, you will be part of McKinsey’s Proposal Services path, a global community focused on growing our existing and new client relationships by enabling efficient and effective delivery of proposals. You will collaborate with other colleagues (e.g., client development advisors, proposal strategists, designers, competitive insights specialists, etc.) to shape our thinking on proposal best practices and drive continuous improvement.

You will report to the SHaPE Proposal Team Leader in Asia.

  • University degree
  • 5+ years of experience in a client services setting, with experience in one or more of : public sector procurement, client development, business development, proposal management, communications
  • Proven knowledge of competitive proposal management, strategies, tactics, communication, and approaches
  • Additional proposal training / certifications (APMP - Association of Proposal Management Professionals). Shipley training or experience a plus
  • Proven project management skills : ability to prioritize and deliver across multiple (sometimes ambiguous or competing) projects while being mindful of the big picture
  • Domain knowledge, experience and expertise in one of relevant public sector areas – e.g., healthcare, sustainability, digital is strongly preferred
  • Strong conceptual and analytical problem-solving skills
  • Excellent communications skills in English and Japanese, written and verbal (e.g., ability to synthesize and convey complex information clearly and compellingly)
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products (i.e., PowerPoint, Excel, MS Word, Adobe Acrobat)
  • Results-oriented; entrepreneurial and self-driven
  • Collaborative; able to build relationships and influence stakeholders across roles and levels
  • High professional and ethical standards and respect for confidentiality
