General Description :
The Medical Science Liaison (MSL) Lead, Solid Tumor, Japan will play a pivotal role in leading and developing the MSL team, ensuring excellence in scientific exchange, KOL engagement, and insight generation. The MSL Lead will serve as a strategic bridge between the MSL team, Medical Affairs leadership, and cross-functional stakeholders, ensuring alignment of field activities with BeiGene’s medical strategy.
The MSL Lead is responsible for mentoring, training, and performance management of MSLs, while also providing input into medical strategies, clinical research initiatives, and evidence generation plans. This role requires close collaboration with global, regional, and local teams to ensure field medical excellence and compliance.
The MSL Lead reports to the Associate Medical Director, Solid Tumor Medical Franchise, Japan.
Essential Functions of the job :
1. MSL Team Leadership & Development
Directly manage, coach, and develop MSLs to enhance scientific knowledge, communication skills, and KOL engagement effectiveness.
Implement a structured training and development program, ensuring continuous improvement in MSL capabilities.
Establish key performance indicators (KPIs) and performance management criteria for MSLs, ensuring consistency and accountability.
Recruit, onboard, and mentor new MSLs to support business expansion.
Conduct regular field coaching, feedback sessions, and performance evaluations to drive excellence.
2. Field Medical Strategy Execution
Ensure MSL activities align with the overall medical strategy, translating high-level objectives into actionable field plans.
Guide KOL engagement prioritization, ensuring scientific discussions align with unmet medical needs.
Lead the development and execution of the MSL engagement plan, ensuring consistency in scientific exchange and insight generation.
Support the Associate Medical Director in scientific communication planning, congress activities, and publication initiatives.
3. KOL & External Stakeholder Engagement
Work closely with MSLs to optimize KOL engagement strategies based on scientific influence and research interests.
Support MSLs in organizing and executing advisory boards, speaker programs, and scientific exchanges.
Act as a senior representative in external engagements, congresses, and collaborative research discussions.
4. Cross-functional Collaboration
Act as a bridge between MSLs and internal functions (Medical, Clinical Development, HEOR, Regulatory, and Commercial) to enhance field medical impact.
Ensure seamless communication between field insights and internal medical strategy teams.
Support evidence generation initiatives (e.g., IITs, RWE studies) by aligning MSL insights with research priorities.
5. Compliance & Medical Excellence
Ensure that MSL activities adhere to global, regional, and local compliance regulations, including industry best practices.
Develop processes for insight collection, analysis, and utilization, ensuring field intelligence drives strategic decision-making.
Establish clear governance for MSL scientific interactions, ensuring all engagements are ethical and compliant.
Qualification Required :
Education Required :
Master’s in life sciences, or PhD preferred.
Advanced degree or an undergraduate degree in life sciences with commensurate pharmaceutical industry and clinical research experience.
Experience and Qualifications :
Minimum 5 years of pharmaceutical industry experience in Medical Affairs, Clinical Development, or relevant scientific roles.
At least 3 years of MSL experience with a strong track record in KOL engagement and field medical execution.
Prior experience in leading or mentoring field medical teams preferred.
Deep scientific expertise in Solid Tumor Oncology.
Strong communication, presentation, and negotiation skills.
Ability to navigate complex cross-functional environments and drive field medical impact.
Fluent in Japanese and English (written & spoken).
Supervisory Responsibilities :
Direct supervision of MSLs within the Solid Tumor Medical Affairs team.
Responsible for mentorship, performance evaluation, and career development of MSLs.
Computer Skills :
Skilled in multiple computer-based tools, including Word, Project, PowerPoint, Excel, and electronic CRM systems.a
PC & iPad literacy required, with experience in CRM platforms for MSL engagement tracking.
Travel : Regular business travel to visit KOLs and attend medical congresses (both domestic and international) required.
