Business Overview

The Marketplace Business is responsible for operating Rakuten Ichiba, Rakuten's founding business.

Since its establishment in 1997, Rakuten has been committed to its mission of "empowering people and society through innovation." Through Rakuten Ichiba, the company has provided a platform that breaks down the barriers of traditional commercial zones, enabling anyone to easily open their own store. This has brought the joy of shopping to users across Japan.

Today, Rakuten Ichiba has grown into one of the largest e-commerce platforms in Japan, serving a vast number of users.

Department Overview

The Ichiba Marketing Department is responsible for formulating and driving marketing strategies to expand the sales of Rakuten Ichiba, which is the core of the Rakuten Group.

The Marketing Planning Office is a section that focuses on mid- to long-term growth across Rakuten Ichiba services. Its responsibilities include business strategies such as GMV forecasting and budget management, Business DX for operational efficiency, and CX strategies.

The Performance Improvement Promotion Group plays a central role in overseeing the cross-functional management of the Marketing Department within the Rakuten Ichiba business. Its activities span a wide range, including the management and forecasting of GMV and expenses, oversight of marketing initiatives, organizational development such as departmental meetings and rules, and the management of cross-functional projects.

Position Details

  • Optimization of investment allocation based on the performance of business strategies and various initiatives
  • Management of marketing investments across the entire department
  • Analysis and promotion of improvements related to profitability
  • Forecasting and budget management of Rakuten Ichiba's GMS (Gross Merchandise Sales)
  • Establishment and systemization of analytical methods to enhance the accuracy of measuring the effectiveness of marketing initiatives

Project Examples

  • Formulating annual GMS forecasts and budget plans
  • Planning investment allocation and driving execution within the department to achieve GMS targets
  • Developing strategies for profitability improvement and driving enhancements through data analysis
  • Improving the accuracy of GMS forecasts by incorporating market trends and data analysis
  • Establishing methods for measuring the effectiveness of new initiatives and improving measurement methods for existing initiatives
  • Managing budgets and initiative evaluations, as well as improving the management framework
  • Onboarding Process

    You will first gain experience in managing GMS and costs, and then move on to engage in strategic analysis and implementation.

    Manager : Mid-career hire, previously worked at a foreign company, 7th year at Rakuten

    Leader : Mid-career hire, previously worked at a home appliance manufacturer, 4th year at Rakuten

    Member : 2nd year as a new graduate hire

    Mandatory Qualifications :

  • Over 3 years of professional experience
  • Experience participating in projects
  • Experience in data analysis and proposing strategies or plans based on the analysis
  • Experience in aggregating, analyzing, and creating materials using data extracted from a database with Excel functions (e.g., LOOKUP, INDEX, MATCH, etc.)
  • Desired Qualifications :

    Skills / Experience

  • Experience in online marketing (e.g., e-commerce businesses)
  • Experience in B2C marketing
  • Experience managing organizational KPIs or budgets
  • Knowledge of managerial accounting or experience in business strategy
  • Experience using SQL
  • Mindset

  • Someone who excels at communicating with a variety of people
  • Someone who enjoys numerical analysis and data management
